01 — MEDIA GUIDE

We pick the grit to match your part

Blasting leaves the metal slightly rough, and that roughness is what paint grabs onto. Too rough and it shows through the finish. Too smooth and the coating peels. We match the abrasive to the metal, then check it with a strip of tape.
Coarse

Garnet grit

Heavy rust, thick steel and trailer frames. The aggressive one, for parts that can take it.

Medium

Aluminum oxide

Welded parts, sheet metal and general stripping. The everyday choice for most jobs.

Fine

Glass bead

Aluminum, wheels and thin or soft parts. Cleans without chewing up the surface.

Profiles shown are the depth left in the metal, measured in thousandths of an inch. Deeper is not better, it just has to match the coating going on top.
02 — Blasting vs. Thermal stripping

Two ways to get a part back to bare metal

Blasting cuts the coating off with abrasive. Thermal stripping bakes it off at 800° in the burn-off oven, then the ash rinses and blasts away. Heavy build-up and awkward shapes usually start in the oven and finish in the booth.

The thermal stripping oven

An 8 × 8 × 12 foot chamber held at 800°. Coatings break down to a fine residue that rinses and blasts away, leaving bare metal with its dimensions untouched. Most loads are back to you within a couple of days.

03 — The what, the when, the how

Both methods take the old finish off. Only one of them leaves the surface ready for powder, and it isn't the one that involves a tank of stripper.

What it is

Abrasive fired at the part under air pressure. It knocks off everything that isn’t metal, and leaves the surface with a fine texture.

That texture is the whole point. It is what makes powder coating stick instead of flake off in two winters.

When you need it

Any time the part already has rust, paint, powder or mill scale on it. New steel from the mill counts.

Skip it and the new finish is only as good as the old one underneath, which is why coatings fail early.

How it goes

Drop the part off or we pick it up. We mask threads and bearing surfaces, blast, blow it off with dry air, and look it over.

From there it goes to primer the same day, or gets wrapped and staged for you to collect.
